The Case of the Missing Prisoners
In the early hours of Saturday, September 10, 2007, correctional officers at FCI Pensacola learned that 2 inmates had escaped from their cells. The inmates had used a makeshift rope made out of bed sheets to escape. The first inmate to escape was identified as 29-year-old Antonio Perkins. He had been serving a 5 year sentence for burglary. Within minutes of escaping, Antonio Perkins was captured by Florida Fish and Wildlife Officers who were conducting a training exercise in the area. The second inmate to escape was identified as 33-year-old Demetrius Boyd. Demetrius Boyd was serving a 12 year sentence for aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. According to reports, it is believed that Antonio Perkins and Demetrius Boyd may have known each other prior to their incarceration at FCI Pensacola.
As soon as news of the escape spread throughout the prison, search efforts commenced. Initially, officers concentrated their efforts on an area near the perimeter fence where it is believed that Antonio Perkins may have scaled down into the surrounding brush in order to avoid capture. However, after several hours of searching without success, officers began widening their search area and also called in assistance from local law enforcement agencies in an effort to locate both inmates alive.
By Sunday morning, September 11th, both Antonio Perkins and Demetrius Boyd had been located safe and sound by law enforcement officials hiding out in different parts of rural Escambia County. It is unclear how or why
