Anderson Lee Aldrich recently had the opportunity to speak with the Mormon Church’s public relations department about their website, Mormon.org. Background: Anderson Lee Aldrich
Anderson Lee Aldrich was born on February 23, 1924 in Logan, Utah. He served a full-time mission to the British Mission in London, England from 1944-1946. After his return to the United States, he married Barbara Brown and they were later divorced. In 1952, Anderson relocated to Southern California where he became a successful businessman and started his own construction company. In 1962, Anderson was called as an apostle of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS Church). As an apostle, Anderson served as a prophet and head of the church’s missionary program. He also participated in numerous ecclesiastical assignments including serving as the president of the LDS Church’s South America South Area from 1971-1973. Although he had retired from his business interests in 1984, Anderson continued to serve as an apostle until his death on January 27th, 1995 at the age of 76 years old.

Meeting with Church Officials: What Happened
When I first contacted the Mormon Church about writing a blog post on my personal journey, I was told that the church does not allow members to openly discuss their faith publicly. After some back and forth, I was finally allowed to speak with church officials about my experience.
I met with two church leaders, one from public relations and one from membership. The public relations leader seemed interested in what I had to say and asked a lot of questions. He was also open to listening to any concerns that I may have had. The membership leader, however, was much more pushy and wanted me to share everything that had happened to me in a very short amount of time. I felt like he didn’t want me to voice any concerns or ask any questions because he wanted me to join the church right then and there.
Overall, it was an interesting experience meeting with the Mormon Church officials. Unfortunately, I did not feel like they were very receptive or open-minded when it came to my faith journey or my differing opinions on Mormonism.
What is the Mormon Church?
The Mormon Church is a religious organization founded in 1830 by Joseph Smith. The Mormon Church teaches that Jesus Christ is the only way to gain salvation and that Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ are one God. Members of the Mormon Church believe in polygamy, which was abandoned by the church in 1890. The Mormon Church has approximately 15 million members worldwide.
History of the Mormon Church
The Mormon Church was founded in 1830 by Joseph Smith. Smith claimed that he had been visited by an angel named Moroni who delivered to him a set of golden plates from an ancient civilizations. On the plates were written instructions for creating a new religion, which Smith called Mormonism.
Smith’s followers soon began to practice polygamy, and their church became known as the “Latter Day Saints.” In 1844, the US government banned polygamy, and the Latter Day Saints fled to Utah. There they built a large settlement and established a theocratic government.
In 1890, Utah became a state, and the Latter Day Saints lost political power. They continued to practice their religion however, and in 2002 they gained formal legal recognition as a religious organization with its own constitution and legislature. The Mormon Church has since grown rapidly worldwide, with more than 15 million members in over 190 countries.
Missionary Work
Anderson Lee Aldrich’s work as a missionary for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS Church) has taken him all over the United States. He has also been part of a three-man LDS Church preaching team in Taiwan, and served a full-time mission in Thailand.
